LOCAL COVERAGE

Process Servers Who Know San Francisco’s Buildings

Serving papers in San Francisco is a different job than serving them anywhere else in California. The subject is rarely standing behind a front door on a quiet street — they’re on the 30th floor behind a doorman, in a secured SoMa loft, or behind a callbox in the Richmond. Our servers know the buildings, the concierge desks, and the access rules.

California law is on your side here: CCP § 415.21 grants registered process servers a statutory right of access to gated communities for service of process, and California courts have upheld substituted service through gate guards and doormen who refuse entry. We use those tools daily — and document every attempt so your proof of service stands up.

Same-Day & Rush Service

Routine, rush, and same-day service levels throughout the City and County of San Francisco, with documented attempt records and prompt proofs of service.

Law Firms & Self-Represented Parties

We serve attorneys, paralegals, businesses, and parties without an attorney — with clear flat-rate pricing published below.

What We Do in San Francisco

Legal Support Services in San Francisco

Summons and complaints, subpoenas, family law documents, unlawful detainers, small claims, and restraining orders — served in compliance with the California Code of Civil Procedure.
Filing at every San Francisco Superior Court location, including the Civic Center Courthouse at 400 McAllister Street.
Electronic recording of abstracts of judgment, liens, deeds, and other recordable documents with the San Francisco county recorder.
If a subject can’t be located, our licensed skip tracers can search for a current address using licensed databases and field intelligence.
Subpoena production of medical records, employment records, and business documents — prepared, served, and delivered by your production date.
Out-of-state subpoenas domesticated for use in California and California subpoenas prepared for actions pending in other states — issued, served, and returned.
Bank levies, wage garnishments, till taps, keeper levies, and vehicle levies under your writ of execution — coordinated with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Civil Section, the levying officer.
Mandatory e-filing with San Francisco Superior Court through the court’s approved e-filing system — plus conventional filing for the case types the court still requires on paper.
The Access Advantage
Doorman Buildings, Gated Entries, Secured High-Rises
Refused access is the #1 reason San Francisco service attempts fail. Our registered servers carry the statutory access rights of CCP § 415.21, know when substituted service on a gate guard or doorman is legally effective, and log every attempt with time, location, and outcome — so even a difficult serve produces a defensible proof of service.

Electronic Filing

Mandatory E-Filing in San Francisco

San Francisco Superior Court has required electronic filing in general civil cases since 2014 — one of the first courts in California to go mandatory — and the court retired its own filing portal in 2018, so all e-filings must go through an approved e-filing service provider.

Since 2021, even new complaints in general civil cases and family law dissolutions must be e-filed. Small claims and the initial filing in name or gender change cases remain conventional, and self-represented parties are exempt. We handle both sides: e-filing through the court’s approved system, and physical filing at the clerk’s window for everything else.

Judgment Enforcement

Writ levies coordinated with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Civil Section — City Hall, Room 456, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place — using the SER-001 and SER-001A instruction forms the Sheriff has required since 2024.

BUSINESS ENTITIES

Serving Corporations and Businesses in San Francisco

San Francisco is one of the West Coast’s densest concentrations of corporate headquarters — finance and law in the Financial District, technology in SoMa and Mission Bay, and thousands of small businesses in between. When a company’s registered agent is a commercial agent office in Sacramento, service there is often fastest, and our statewide network handles it. But when the entity must be served in San Francisco, our servers reach the right person under California law: an officer, director, or general manager for corporations (CCP § 416.10), or a member, manager, or authorized agent for LLCs (CCP § 416.40) — including inside secured office towers where lobby security screens visitors.

One rule that catches people: a standard USPS P.O. Box is never a valid address for corporate service — a physical street address is required. But when a business lists a private mailbox at a retail mail store (a UPS Store or similar Commercial Mail Receiving Agency), California treats that storefront as a valid physical location under CCP § 415.20, and we can complete service at the counter.

METHODS OF SERVICE

How Individuals Are Served in San Francisco

Personal Service — CCP § 415.10
Documents handed directly to the individual — the most defensible method in court and always our first approach.

Substitute Service — CCP § 415.20
After reasonable diligence, documents may be left with a competent adult at the subject’s home or usual place of business — including a doorman or gate guard where courts have held access was refused — then mailed first-class to the same address.

Service by Publication — CCP § 415.50
When a defendant can’t be located after standard methods are exhausted, a court may authorize publication in a qualifying newspaper. We can prepare the declaration of diligence the court requires.

Proof of Service
Every completed service generates a signed, sworn affidavit on the court-approved form — in your account and inbox the moment service is done, ready to file.
