Beverly Hills is home to some of California's most active civil litigation practices, in personal injury, entertainment, family law, real estate, and business disputes, and those cases require records from third parties. Direct Legal's Records Retrieval Division has handled records subpoenas for Los Angeles area law firms for decades, led by Joe Huber, who has worked in records retrieval since 1984. Questions? Local coverage

Records Retrieval for Beverly Hills Law Firms and the Westside

Firms along Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard, and the rest of the Beverly Hills business district send us records work for cases pending throughout Los Angeles Superior Court and the federal courts. The custodians are often close by: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCLA Health, Beverly Hills-area physicians, clinics, and imaging centers, and the corporate records departments of businesses in the 90210, 90211, and 90212 ZIP codes and the surrounding Westside.

The Beverly Hills Courthouse at 9355 Burton Way, part of Los Angeles Superior Court’s West District, hears civil, small claims, and traffic matters. Many Beverly Hills cases are assigned elsewhere, to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse downtown or the Santa Monica Courthouse, and a records subpoena works the same way wherever the case is pending. If your case needs documents from the court file instead, see court document retrieval; for process serving and filing in Beverly Hills, see our Beverly Hills process server page.

Common requests

Commonly Subpoenaed Records in Beverly Hills Cases

  • Hospital and physician medical records
  • Medical billing records
  • X-rays and radiology images
  • Pharmacy records
  • Employment and payroll records
  • Bank and financial records
  • Insurance claim files
  • School and academic records
  • Corporate and business records

Personal injury, family law, and probate cases drive most of the medical and financial requests; employment and business disputes would seek payroll, corporate, and insurance records. A subpoena for a customer’s records from a telephone utility is valid only with the customer’s signed consent (CCP § 1985.3(f)).

California law

Deposition Officer and Registered Professional Photocopier

When a deposition subpoena requests only business records, the custodian delivers a copy of the records, with the custodian’s declaration, to the deposition officer named on the subpoena (CCP § 2020.430). The deposition officer must be a professional photocopier registered under Business and Professions Code § 22450 and following, or a person exempt from registration under § 22451, which includes attorneys and their employees. No deposition officer, registered or exempt, can be financially interested in the case or be a relative or employee of any party’s attorney (CCP § 2020.420). That means a law firm’s own staff can’t act as deposition officer on the firm’s cases.

Direct Legal Support, Inc., Joe Huber, Records Retrieval Manager · Los Angeles County Registration No. X-380 · Bonded in the State of California

Direct Legal can be the deposition officer for the subpoenas your office serves or our office serves. After production, we deliver the records to the party who issued the subpoena, and to any other party that has requested to purchase a copy from us, including up to six months after the case settles (CCP § 2020.440).

Questions

Beverly Hills Records Retrieval Questions

Do you subpoena records from Cedars-Sinai, UCLA Health, and other Westside providers?

Yes. Medical records subpoenas for Beverly Hills cases most often go to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCLA Health, and the physicians, clinics, and imaging centers around Beverly Hills. We prepare the subpoena and the Notice to Consumer, serve the custodian, follow up until the records are produced, and deliver them through our secure portal.

Is a records subpoena filed at the Beverly Hills Courthouse?

No. A deposition subpoena for business records is issued by the attorney of record or the court clerk (CCP 2020.210) and served on the custodian of records. It isn't filed with the court unless someone brings a motion about it. The subpoena lists the case's court and case number, whether the case is at the Beverly Hills Courthouse, Stanley Mosk, Santa Monica, or any other courthouse.

Where do the custodians send the records?

To Direct Legal as deposition officer, at 901 Corporate Center Drive, Suite 400, Monterey Park, CA 91754. We scan and process them and deliver them to your Beverly Hills office as PDF or ZIP files through our secure portal, with the custodian's declaration and the proof of service.

How long does a records subpoena take for a Beverly Hills case?

The production date can be no earlier than 20 days after the subpoena is issued or 15 days after it is served, whichever is later (CCP 2020.410). Routine orders typically set production about 35 days after issuance, and rush orders can be as soon as 20 days. When the custodian actually produces depends on the facility, and we follow up until the records arrive.

Do you handle federal cases in the Central District of California?

Yes. For cases in the United States District Court for the Central District of California we prepare records subpoenas on form AO 88B and the Notice of Intent that Rule 45 requires before service, and serve the custodian. Production must be within 100 miles of where the custodian lives, works, or regularly does business (FRCP 45).

Who is the deposition officer on your subpoenas?

Joe Huber, who leads our Records Retrieval Division, is the deposition officer for the subpoenas our office issues on your behalf. He acts under Direct Legal Support, Inc.'s registration as a registered and bonded California professional photocopier, Los Angeles County Registration No. X-380.

What does records retrieval cost?

Records retrieval is quoted per order, with discounted, bundled pricing for firms that send us their records work. Custodians may charge their own reasonable costs for locating and copying records (Evidence Code 1563(b)), which are separate from our fee. Call the Records Division at (213) 484-9000 or email rrorders@directlegal.com for a quote.
