- Order deadline and processing. California orders must be received by 1:30 PM Pacific to begin processing that business day, and orders for service outside California by 10:30 AM Pacific. Orders received after the deadline are processed as if received the next business day. Urgent (same-day) and On Demand requests received after 1:30 PM are subject to availability.
- Pages and pricing. Each order includes the first 50 pages; additional pages are $0.50 each. Prices and service times are per person or entity and per address attempted, and include up to 4 to 6 attempts per address in California or 3 to 5 attempts outside California, unless otherwise stated.
- Address and attempt policy. If an address is invalid, vacant, or nonexistent, or the order is canceled after the first attempt, the full fee remains due and no further attempts are made at that address.
- Additional fees. The portal shows the fees for your order before you submit it. Substitute service mailing, when required by law, is an additional $15. Filing the proof of service with the court, if you request it, is an additional fee; the prices shown do not include it.

How Individuals Are Served in San Diego
California law allows several ways to serve a person. We always try personal service first and document every attempt so your proof of service holds up to challenge.

Personal Service
Documents are handed directly to the individual. This is the most defensible method in court and always our first approach.

Substitute Service
After reasonable diligence, documents may be left with a competent adult at the person's home or usual place of business, then mailed first-class to the same address. Every prior attempt is documented in writing so the proof of service holds up to challenge.
Starting January 1, 2027, AB 747 requires at least three good faith attempts at personal delivery, on three different days at three different times, before substitute service on an individual. Each attempt will also need a photo of the service location stamped with the date, time, and GPS coordinates. Every Direct Legal order already includes up to 4 to 6 attempts at a single California address.

Private Mailboxes
When a private mailbox at a mail store, such as a UPS Store, is the only address we can find, the papers can be left with the store on the first attempt. The store then mails them to the box holder. A regular USPS P.O. Box cannot be used for service.

Gated Communities
When a gated community is staffed by a guard or other security personnel, they must let a registered process server in for a reasonable time to serve papers. San Diego County has guard-gated communities from Rancho Santa Fe to the Coronado Cays, and our servers work with gate staff and document each attempt.

When a defendant can't be located after standard methods are exhausted, a court may authorize publication in a qualifying newspaper. We can prepare the declaration of diligence the court requires.

Key Rules for Serving a Business in San Diego
- A corporation can be served through its registered agent for service of process, or through an officer or general manager (CCP § 416.10).
- Limited liability companies and partnerships are usually served through their registered agent. You can look up an agent on the California Secretary of State business search.
- When a company's registered agent is a commercial agent in Los Angeles County or Sacramento, our statewide servers handle that too, on the same order.
- A standard USPS P.O. Box is never a valid address for service; a physical street address is required. If the only address we can find is a private mailbox at a mail store, such as a UPS Store, the papers can be left with the store on the first attempt (CCP § 415.20(c)).

Where are San Diego civil cases filed?
Civil cases from the city of San Diego, East County, and South County are filed at the Civil Business Office in the Hall of Justice, 330 W. Broadway, Room 225, which is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. Every unlawful detainer in the county is filed there too, along with small claims. Civil cases from the North County venue are filed at the North County Regional Center in Vista, and probate and family law cases go to the Central Courthouse at 1100 Union Street.
Is e-filing mandatory in San Diego Superior Court?
For attorneys, yes. Since April 15, 2021, represented parties must e-file in all limited, unlimited, and complex civil cases under Local Rule 2.1.4, and in all probate case types. Self-represented parties aren't required to e-file. In civil cases, the plaintiff must also serve the court's e-filing General Order and the Electronic Filing Requirements (Civil) form CIV-409 with the complaint.
Are your process servers registered?
Yes. Our servers are registered process servers under Business and Professions Code section 22350. A proof of service signed by a registered process server is presumed to state the facts of service correctly under Evidence Code section 647, which shifts the burden to anyone who challenges it.
Can you serve someone at their workplace in San Diego?
Yes. A person can be personally served anywhere they are found, including at work. If personal service isn't possible after reasonable diligence, California law allows substitute service at the person's usual place of business by leaving the papers with the person apparently in charge, who must be told what the papers are, and then mailing a copy to the same address (CCP 415.20).
Do you handle writ levies in San Diego?
Yes.
