Mandatory E-Filing in Los Angeles County

Electronic Filing

Los Angeles Superior Court requires e-filing for represented parties in civil and probate cases through an approved e-filing service provider; self-represented litigants may e-file but aren't required to. In small claims, attorneys must e-file post-judgment documents. Under the court's rules, writs and abstracts are e-filed as a separate electronic envelope, a detail that matters when you're enforcing a judgment on a deadline. Our California e-filing service

East or West? Get the Building Right

Civil, family, small claims, and eviction cases are filed at Van Nuys East, while West handles criminal and traffic matters and a few civil courtrooms. Probate and unlimited personal injury cases aren't filed in Van Nuys at all; under the court's local rules they go downtown to Stanley Mosk. We route every filing to the right window.

Judgment Enforcement in the West Building

The Sheriff's Civil Management Bureau Van Nuys branch is in the West courthouse building, Room 110, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and closed from noon to 1:00 p.m. Levies are opened at the branch with jurisdiction over the service address. Writ levy services

Methods of service

How Individuals Are Served in Van Nuys

California law allows several ways to serve a person. We always try personal service first and document every attempt so your proof of service holds up to challenge.

  • CCP § 415.10

    Personal Service

Documents are handed directly to the individual. This is the most defensible method in court and always our first approach.

  • CCP § 415.20

    Substitute Service

After reasonable diligence, documents may be left with a competent adult at the person's home or usual place of business, then mailed first-class to the same address. Every prior attempt is documented in writing so the proof of service holds up to challenge.

Starting January 1, 2027, AB 747 requires at least three good faith attempts at personal delivery, on three different days at three different times, before substitute service on an individual. Each attempt will also need a photo of the service location stamped with the date, time, and GPS coordinates. Every Direct Legal order already includes up to 4 to 6 attempts at a single California address.

  • § 415.20(c)

    Private Mailboxes

When a private mailbox at a mail store, such as a UPS Store, is the only address we can find, the papers can be left with the store on the first attempt. The store then mails them to the box holder. A regular USPS P.O. Box cannot be used for service.

  • CCP § 415.21

    Gated Communities

When a gated community is staffed by a guard or other security personnel, they must let a registered process server in for a reasonable time to serve papers. Some of the Valley's hillside neighborhoods are gated, and for secured apartment buildings without a guard we time attempts around residents' schedules and document each one.

  • CCP § 415.50

    Service by Publication

When a defendant can't be located after standard methods are exhausted, a court may authorize publication in a qualifying newspaper. We can prepare the declaration of diligence the court requires.

  • Court-ready

    Proof of Service

Every completed service produces a signed proof of service on the Judicial Council form, in your account and inbox the moment service is done, ready to file.

Business entities

Serving Corporations and Businesses in Van Nuys

Van Nuys and the surrounding Valley run on a mix of businesses: the auto dealerships and service businesses along Van Nuys Boulevard, the aviation companies around Van Nuys Airport, medical offices and hospitals, entertainment production companies, and the law and professional offices clustered near the Government Center and along Ventura Boulevard. Corporate service here can mean a hangar office, a dealership showroom, or a Ventura Boulevard tower lobby.

Key Rules for Serving a Business in Van Nuys

  • A corporation can be served through its registered agent for service of process, or through an officer or general manager (CCP § 416.10).
  • Limited liability companies and partnerships are usually served through their registered agent. You can look up an agent on the California Secretary of State business search.
  • When the registered agent sits in downtown Los Angeles, in Glendale (such as CT Corporation), or elsewhere in the county, our servers cover all of it from our Los Angeles office.
  • A standard USPS P.O. Box is never a valid address for service; a physical street address is required. If the only address we can find is a private mailbox at a mail store, such as a UPS Store, the papers can be left with the store on the first attempt (CCP § 415.20(c)).
Questions

Van Nuys Process Serving FAQs

How fast can you serve legal documents in Van Nuys?

We offer routine, rush, and same-day service levels throughout Van Nuys and the San Fernando Valley. Our servers work the Valley every business day, so rush assignments go to a server already in the area, not into tomorrow's queue.

What's the difference between Van Nuys East and Van Nuys West courthouses?

They're two separate buildings in the Van Nuys Government Center. Van Nuys Courthouse East, at 6230 Sylmar Avenue, is where civil, family law, restraining order, small claims, and unlawful detainer cases from Van Nuys are filed. Van Nuys Courthouse West, at 14400 Erwin Street Mall, handles felony, misdemeanor, and traffic matters and also houses a few civil courtrooms and the Sheriff's civil office. Filing a civil document at the wrong building means a wasted trip, which is exactly the kind of local detail our filing team handles for you.

Where do you file court documents in Van Nuys?

Most Van Nuys civil and family filings go to Van Nuys Courthouse East at 6230 Sylmar Avenue. A few case types are filed elsewhere: probate and limited civil cases (other than collections) go to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse downtown, and limited civil collection cases go to the Chatsworth Courthouse. Unlimited personal injury cases are also filed at Stanley Mosk, under Local Rule 2.3. Our filing team knows which building takes which document, and as a Los Angeles company we cover every LA Superior Court location countywide.

Is e-filing mandatory in Los Angeles County?

For represented parties in civil and probate cases, yes. Los Angeles Superior Court requires e-filing through an approved e-filing service provider, while self-represented litigants may e-file but aren't required to. Writs and abstracts are e-filed as a separate electronic envelope under the court's rules. We run both tracks daily: electronic where required, physical at the Van Nuys clerk's window where it isn't.

Do you handle writ levies in Van Nuys?

Yes. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Civil Management Bureau has a Van Nuys branch in the West courthouse building, Room 110. Your levy must be opened at the branch with jurisdiction over the service address, with proof of service returned within five court days. We prepare the writ of execution, SER-001, and SER-001A instructions, open the file at the correct branch, serve bank levies at each institution's designated central location for legal process, and handle wage garnishments, till taps, keeper levies, and vehicle levies.

What happens if the person can't be found at the address I provide?

Our servers make multiple attempts at different times of day and document each attempt. Where permitted, we can complete substituted service under California law. If the subject can't be located at all, our licensed skip tracers can search for a current address before your deadline passes.

What areas do you cover around Van Nuys?

All of Van Nuys and the San Fernando Valley, including Sherman Oaks, Encino, Reseda, Northridge, North Hollywood, Studio City, Panorama City, Valley Glen, Lake Balboa, Winnetka, Canoga Park, Woodland Hills, Tarzana, Sun Valley, Pacoima, and Sylmar, and through our statewide network, every city in California.

How much does a process server cost in Van Nuys?

For law firms and legal departments, process serving in Van Nuys is $95 for Standard service, $145 for Priority, $175 for Urgent same-day service, and $225 for On Demand. For parties without an attorney, the rates are $150, $200, $250, and $300. Each rate covers one person or entity at one address and includes up to 4 to 6 attempts and the first 50 pages.

What is changing for substitute service in California in 2027?

Beginning January 1, 2027, AB 747 requires at least three good faith attempts at personal delivery, on three different days at three different times, before substitute service can be used on an individual. Each attempt must also be documented with a photo of the service location stamped with the date, time, and GPS coordinates. Every Direct Legal order includes up to 4 to 6 attempts at a single California address.
