Using the finder

How the Court Finder Works

Type a city, a community, or a ZIP code, and the finder shows that county's superior court: each courthouse we file at, with its address, public hours, and our same-day deadline, and whether we can e-file there.

  • Cities and communities. The finder knows more than 2,300 California cities, towns, and communities, and the county each one is in.
  • ZIP codes. ZIP codes come from the 2020 Census. When a ZIP code crosses a county line, the finder shows the county that covers most of it and lets you switch to the other.
  • Los Angeles County. The court assigns cases to courthouses by location and case type, so for Los Angeles County the finder also shows the filing courthouse for each case type, from the court's own Filing Court Locator.
  • E-filing. Each county shows whether e-filing is required, optional, or not available for each case type, with a link to our guide for that court.
  • Rates. Each courthouse links to our filing, courtesy copy, and document retrieval rates for that court.

Where to File in Los Angeles County

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County has dozens of courthouses, and where a case is filed depends on where it comes from and what kind of case it is. One ZIP code can send unlimited civil cases to one courthouse and small claims or unlawful detainers to another. The court's Filing Court Locator gives the courthouse for each case type, and the finder above uses its answers for every Los Angeles County ZIP code, checked October 18, 2026.

The locator separates unlimited civil cases (claims over $35,000, plus family law and probate) from limited civil cases ($35,000 or less, including unlawful detainer and small claims). The court also notes that caseload changes in the San Fernando Valley, East Los Angeles, and North Central districts can move a civil or probate case to a different district, so check with the clerk's office if your case comes from those areas. You can look up any address on the court's Filing Court Locator (opens in a new tab).

Questions

Court Finder Questions

How does the court finder choose a courthouse?

It looks up the county for the city, community, or ZIP code you enter and lists that county's superior courthouses. For Los Angeles County, it also shows the filing courthouse for each case type from the Superior Court's Filing Court Locator.

What if my ZIP code crosses a county line?

The finder shows the county that covers most of the ZIP code and offers a button for the other county. The right county for a case depends on the case, not only the ZIP code, so check with the court if you are not sure.

Are the hours shown the court's filing hours?

They are each courthouse's public hours from our court list. Clerk's office windows can be shorter, courts close on court holidays, and some close early on Fridays, so check with the court before you go. Our same-day deadline is the latest time your order can reach us to be filed at that courthouse the same day.

Do you e-file in my county?

We e-file in 46 California superior courts. Each county in the finder shows whether e-filing is required, optional, or not available for each case type, with a link to our guide for that court. In the other 12 counties, we file your documents in person.

Can Direct Legal file at these courthouses for me?

Yes. We file in person at courthouses in all 58 counties, deliver courtesy copies, and retrieve court documents. Each courthouse in the finder links to our rates for that court.

How current is this information?

Courthouse addresses, hours, and our deadlines come from the court list behind our rates, updated October 14, 2026. E-filing rules were last checked in October 2026, and the Los Angeles case type answers were checked on October 18, 2026. If anything looks wrong, call us at (800) 675-5376.
